They are also trained to memorize the positions of different letters, commands and numbers on a keyboard so that they might learn how to type without looking away from a computer screen. A beginning-level Keyboarding class for adults utilizes exercises and finger practices to train students in the basics of typing short and complex sentences. Keyboarding skills are more important than ever as the vast majority of work is done using a computer, and the best way to acquire keyboarding skills is through touch typing.

Adult Book Club Meeting

Once Upon a Town: The Miracle of the North Platte Canteen
by Bob Greene
Wednesday, November 4, 12:00 noon
Dulaney Room

During World War II, the citizens of North Platte, Nebraska transformed their railroad depot into a canteen for soldiers going through town--providing free egg salad sandwiches, apples, candy and homemade cakes; magazines, Bibles and music; encouragement and friendship.

Between Christmas Day 1941 and early April 1946, some 6 million military personnel were fed and nurtured by a community of 12,000 people. All of them were volunteers, inspired to do something for men who might never return home.

“We’re always talking about what it is that we want the country to become,” author Bob Greene writes. “Maybe the answer is one we already had, but somehow threw away.”

Adult Book Club Meeting

A Slight Trick of the Mind, , by Mitch Cullin
Wednesday, October 7, 12:00 noon
Dulaney Room

Cullin imagines a ninety-three-year-old Sherlock Holmes retired to his bee-keeping in 1947 England. Enfeebled but still intellectually curious, Holmes copes with the indignities of old age and, despite memory problems, reminisces about a beautiful, married woman from a case he was on years ago. In extreme old age Holmes becomes a witness to the birth of our own era -- a time, as Cullin puts it, “of lonely, searching souls.”
